If you've lived through an Ontario winter, you know how rough and long they can be. Save yourself the hassle of waking up extra early to shovel yourself out of your driveway and even better, come home to a snow-free driveway and walkway after a long day of work with a custom Farr Mechanical Snowmelt System.
A snowmelt system prevents the buildup of snow and ice on driveways, walkways and patios. It is designed to function during a snowstorm, thus improving safety and eliminating winter maintenance labour, such as shovelling, plowing, and spreading de-icing salts.
Snowmelt systems are not only helpful in that they essentially eliminate the maintenance labour that comes with living in snow-prone climates, they also may extend the life of your driveway, walkway and/or patio materials (concrete, pavers, asphalt) by eliminating the use of de-icing salts and/or chemicals, as well as eliminating the physical damage that comes from winter service vehicles (snowplows).
Our custom snowmelt systems operate in conjunction with an automatic activation control that will turn the system on when it senses precipitation and freezing temperatures, and turn the system off when the temperatures are above freezing. This will ensure the system is only active during useful periods which reduces energy waste, and means less human involvement in the operation of the system.
Step one involves lifting and demolishing any existing driveway and/or walkway and materials (i.e. interlock). This first step includes:
- Excavating the appropriate amount down in driveway/walkway for new snowmelt system
- Removing necessary materials offsite
- Laying a high performance bedding base for insulation
Step two includes:
- Laying R-10 30 PSI insulation panels
- Laying 3/4” Uponor Helipex Tubing with 9” spacing
- Installing stainless steel high-flow manifold w/ flow meters, temperature gauges and isolation valves
- Installing mechanical room boiler system for snowmelt connection or tie-in to existing boiler system, including pressure gauges, isolation valves, automatic glycol feeder, glycol supply, hydraulic separation, expansion tank, zone switching relays, controls and any other necessary materials
- Installing stainless steel outdoor manifold cabinet to conceal manifold, if necessary
Step three includes:
- Pouring of concrete on top of snowmelt system
- Relaying any previously existing driveway materials (i.e. interlock)
